The subject Portuguese is part of the Department of Romance Studies and Classics. The department is characterized by a dynamic research and education environment and currently has around 65 employees. Close to 100 students study Portuguese at basic level, advanced level and postgraduate level each academic year. Teaching and research in Portuguese deals with the Portuguese-speaking world in the broadest sense. Central research areas within all Romance languages ​​are literature and linguistics. Main responsibilities

The tasks mainly consist of teaching at basic level and advanced level within a wide range of courses alongside the purely literary elements, such as text reading, cultural knowledge, language proficiency (oral and written production), and academic writing. Teaching duties also include course responsibility, course administration, and supervision. The holder is expected to carry out pedagogical development work, be involved in the department's research and education at postgraduate level and be able to initiate, organize and lead research projects, actively work for external funding for the department's research, and stay informed about developments in the field of Lusophone literary studies. The holder is also expected to take an active part in the department’s work by undertaking administrative and investigative tasks and being part of working groups. The employment consists of teaching (70%) and research/development (30%). 

Qualification requirements

Eligible for employment is anyone who has completed a doctorate in Portuguese with a literature topic (or has an equivalent foreign degree) and has documented teaching skills (mainly at university level). All teaching positions at Stockholm University require that the applicant has an ability to collaborate and the general suitability required to complete the tasks.

A special eligibility requirement is documented high-level proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese.

Furthermore, good skills in English (or any Scandinavian language) are required for the cooperation within the department, faculty and university to function.

Assessment criteria

In the appointment process, special and equal importance will be given to research skills and teaching skills. Great importance is given to good cooperation skills as well as ability and readiness to undertake administrative tasks within the department.

In case all other merits are equal, experience of teaching Portuguese as a second language is decisive. 

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who lacks this qualification must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.  Applicants who consider themselves to have equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal education must explain in their application how the knowledge has been acquired and why it corresponds to the competence that formal education provides.

About the employment

This position (in Swedish, “universitetslektor”) is full-time, indefinite-term employment. A six-month probationary period may apply.
