We seek a postdoctoral fellow to join the project ReFRESH – SPIRIT (Sustainability and Peace In Resilience and Inner Transformations). The project brings together evidence on psychological and social-ecological systems resilience to explore the possibilities for sustainability transformations in fragile contexts. The focus will be on better understanding the links between individual and collective forms of trauma, healing and sustainability transformations.
Moving from violent conflict to peace and sustainability will require transformations, which in turn requires confronting and addressing the inequalities, social-ecological harms, individual and collective traumas that are part of the conflict dynamics in the Anthropocene. Environmental destruction, conflict and trauma are intertwined, but the complex ways through which they interact are still poorly understood. There is a need to better understand how these complex dynamics shape which transformations emerge and how they unfold.
There are growing calls for bottom-up solutions that are suited to addressing the complex dynamics of large-scale conflicts and collective healing. Therefore, there is a need to identify innovative initiatives, or “seeds”, that are already grappling with the intersection of psychological and social-ecological resilience on-the-ground. The project will have strong links and build on work completed in the Seeds of Resilience for Peace and Stability initiative led by the Global Resilience Partnership.
The research for the postdoctoral position could include surveys, interviews, reflexive transdisciplinary practices, and in-depth case studies of existing innovative seed initiatives focused on the psychological and social-ecological aspects of transformations in fragile contexts. The position will involve deeply conceptual/theoretical work, empirical research, and transdisciplinary engagement with practitioners engaged in ongoing change-making processes for peace and sustainability.
The postdoctoral position will be part of the ReFRESH-SPIRIT project team, working closely with Associate Professor Michele-Lee Moore and Dr. Cibele Queiroz. The postdoctoral position will also join one or several of SRC’s research themes that best align with the successful candidate’s interests. The postdoctoral position will also have opportunities to collaborate with students and researchers with diverse research interests and perspectives.
The doctoral degree must be completed before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, such as sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
We seek a candidate with the following qualifications:
Emphasis will be placed on skills and interest in moving forward a transdisciplinary research frontier, with the experience required to respectfully engage in cross-cultural settings on highly sensitive issues in fragile contexts. We are seeking an enthusiastic, organized researcher who has the ability to work in an international, fast-paced environment. You are responsible, self-motivated, and a good team player.
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years, and a maximum of three years with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
Further information about the position can be obtained from Associate Professor Michele-Lee Moore, michelelee.moore@su.se.
