The Department of Linguistics has approximately 70 employees and is one of the largest language departments at Stockholm University. Approximately 30 per cent of the department’s operations focus on teaching, with the remaining 70 per cent being research, most of which is externally funded. The Department of Linguistics offers courses and programmes in two main areas: linguistics and sign language. Our researchers are active in areas such as child language development, computational linguistics, general linguistics, the multilingualism of the deaf and hard of hearing, phonetics and sign language linguistics.

Subject/subject description

Linguistics, with a specialization in Computational Linguistics. Computational Linguistics is an interdisciplinary research field that deals with computational models of natural language. Computational Linguistics is also a research and teaching profile at the Department of Linguistics, alongside General Linguistics, Child Language Development, Phonetics, Sign Language, and Multilingualism of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (please visit the department's website at www.ling.su.se). Research in Computational Linguistics has been conducted at the Department of Linguistics since the 1960s. The current research focuses on the analysis of both contemporary and historical texts from different eras and places in many different languages, with applications in language technology and digital humanities.

Main responsibilities

The duties include teaching, research, course development, supervision, and examination at various levels in linguistics, primarily within computational linguistics, but also other suitable teaching within the department's existing course offerings. The offerings include courses in computer systems, programming and machine learning, mathematics, statistics, corpus linguistics, essay and project work, semantics, as well as an introductory course in linguistics. The courses are offered at the bachelor's and master's levels. The duties of a Senior Lecturer also include participating in pedagogical, scientific, and administrative development work, as well as actively engaging in the department's research environment and conducting individual research.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for appointment as a Senior Lecturer in Computational Linguistics, the candidate must have a relevant doctoral degree (e.g., in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Language Technology, or Computer Science), documented scientific competence in Computational Linguistics, and documented pedagogical proficiency. General eligibility requirements include the ability to cooperate and the competence and suitability necessary to perform the duties well.

Assessment criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, great and equal weight will be placed on pedagogical and scientific proficiency in linguistics with a specialization on computational linguistics. Great importance will also be placed on the breadth of these proficiencies. The breadth of pedagogical proficiency refers to the ability to teach subjects within the department's course offerings. The breadth of scientific proficiency refers to the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research projects, in line with the other research conducted at the department.

In this recruitment, Stockholm University will primarily consider those who, after a comprehensive assessment of competence, merits, skills, and personal abilities, have the best conditions to carry out the current tasks and contribute to the positive development of the department.

Particularly meritorious are the following:

  • Documented ability to teach a course offering relevant to the department.
  • Experience in applying for and obtaining external research funding.
  • Documented administrative proficiency.

Meritorious are the following:

  • Ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work.
  • Documented ability for interdisciplinary collaboration, preferably in one of the areas where research is conducted at the department.
  • Experience of research and teaching in speech technology.
  • Proficiency in Swedish (or Norwegian or Danish) as required for collaboration within the department, faculty, university, and society at large in accordance with the description above of the main duties.

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who lacks this qualification must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.  Applicants who consider themselves to have equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal education must explain in their application how the knowledge has been acquired and why it corresponds to the competence that formal education provides.
