Project description

The postdoctoral position is situated in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a focus on design and policy considerations for interpersonal data. The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor Airi Lampinen at Stockholm University as well as in close collaboration with Professor Madeline Balaam at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. 

The project centers on how we might design intimate technologies that empower their users to care for and share their data and on questions regarding who should access interpersonal data. In particular, the project adopts a participatory approach centered around people's experiences interacting with and sharing intimate technologies that collect and store interpersonal data. The research activities will be situated within the field of interaction design and include design and development of artifacts and digital prototypes to invite people to interrogate their data.

The position involves participatory design activities, prototyping, and probe studies. The overall goal is to explore data, design, and policy considerations for (inter)personal intimate data.

Main responsibilities

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a background in Human–Computer Interaction and/or Interaction Design with experience in the design and development of interactive prototypes, along with competence in pursuing empirical and designerly research in intimate and sensitive settings that feature digital trace data.

The research will be interdisciplinary in nature and it will draw upon links between Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, and relevant social sciences. The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral fellow will include both empirical and design work related to the entanglements and interactions between individuals and their digital trace data. 

This project is situated in a multidisciplinary HCI research group with extensive international collaborations. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to present their work in international venues and journals, and to collaborate with colleagues both at Stockholm University and KTH.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

The candidates must have successfully passed Stage 1 and Stage 2 of Digital Futures postdoc fellowships evaluation spring 2024.

Assesment criteria

The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills.  The following criteria will be used for assessing candidates:

• Research expertise: A track record demonstrating excellence in human–computer interaction, in particular as applied to intimate data and sensitive settings
• Independence: Ability to formulate own original research ideas and conduct research independently in the fields of HCI and Interaction Design.
• Collaborative abilities: Ability to work as a part of team, and evidence of active involvement in collaborative research projects.
• Communication abilities: Ability to fluently communicate research ideas and results. This should include both written outputs and presentations at top conference venues.
• Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on social considerations related to intimate data. 

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

About the post

The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2024-09-01 or as per agreement.
