The Department of Geological Sciences is a department within the Faculty of Science with courses at master's, bachelor's and orientation levels. The department supports a broad range of basic research within marine geology and geophysics, geochemistry and classical geology.

Main responsibilities

We are looking for a proactive and self-motivated individual for our modern geochemical research environment. You will be responsible for the Stable Isotope Laboratory (SIL), focusing on maintenance, calibration, user training, and method development on our stable isotope instruments and associated equipment. In collaboration with researchers, PhD students, and other users, you will develop new analytical methods. It is expected that in the position, you will acquire the necessary skills to develop new methods, as well as to operate, maintain, and advance isotope analyses. This may include adapting existing equipment or constructing new experimental and/or analytical ancillary equipment.

As a research engineer, you will also be responsible for general laboratory duties, including practical, financial, and safety management of laboratory operations. You will work closely with three other research engineers and be part of the department's technical-administrative group (TA-group). The areas of responsibility may change over time depending on the users' needs.

Qualification requirements

We are looking for a competent individual with a PhD or someone with several years of work experience in mass spectrometry with demonstrated experience with IRMS, holding relevant natural science knowledge. The ideal candidate should enjoy service-centered scientific work, demonstrate flexibility, precision, responsibility, initiative, and be solution-oriented. A structured working methodology, combined with excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English, is essential. While you should thrive in independent work environments, it is also crucial to have good collaboration skills. Personal attributes will be considered throughout the selection process.

To be a candidate for this position, you must also have competence and experience with one or more of the instruments listed below, including QA/QC. It is advantageous if you have experience with all the instruments listed:

  • GC-C-IRMS (Thermo, Delta V plus)
  • EA-IRMS (Thermo, Delta V advantage)
  • Gasbench II - IRMS (Thermo, MAT253)
  • CRDS-LWIA (Liquid Water Isotope Analyzer, from Picarro) or other CRDS (Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy) or other laser techniques aimed at measuring isotope ratios.

Experience with other techniques is also advantageous, e.g., MC-ICP-MS, as well as techniques for scanning sediment cores, such as XRF and MST. 

About the employment

This is a full-time, indefinite-term employment with a six-month probationary period. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date as agreement.
