The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK) is, with about 160 employees, one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Natural sciences at Stockholm University. A significant part of the teaching activities is at the undergraduate level with courses in General, Physical, Inorganic, and Analytical Chemistry. The teaching at the graduate level focuses on the master programs in Sustainable Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. Research activities in the area of Materials Chemistry focus on developing and understanding advanced routes for synthesis, processing, production, as well as the use of structural- and functional materials in applications towards a healthy, sustainable and environmentally friendly society.

Project description

Project title: Electrochemical materials based on colloidal lignin particles

The position will be associated with the ERC Starting Grant project titled “Circular lignin materials from well-defined functional building blocks” (CIRCULIG). The postdoc will develop electrochemical systems based on colloidal lignin particles. We are particularly interested in laying the groundwork to the use of lignin in electrocatalysis and energy storage processes. The research focus will be on circularity, meaning reuse, repurposing and recycling of the lignin-based materials in an environmentally conscious manner. The ideal applicant is proactive and equipped with a problem-solving mindset. The ambition to conduct interdisciplinary frontier research at the broad breadth of materials chemistry is an asset.

Main responsibilities

Scientific research and education. The practical work involves synthesis and fabrication of electrochemical materials that will adhere to the principles of green chemistry, along with material characterization and performance testing. The Postdoctoral Fellow is also expected to instruct students and assist with project management within the focus areas of the group.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assesment criteria

The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in electrochemistry and materials chemistry. The ideal applicant is equipped with a problem-solving “can-do” mindset combined with a strong track-record of original research at the crossroads of electrochemistry and materials chemistry. Strong skillset in polymer chemistry, especially lignin chemistry and/or colloid science specialisation is considered an asset. In addition, demonstrated record of accomplishment in synthetic organic chemistry and polymer chemistry and broad knowledge of related processing and characterization methods are considered as merits for the applicant. Experience from nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy methods releavnt to lignin characterization is an additional asset. The applicant should have an excellent command of English, both orally and in writing.

About the post

The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2024-12-02 or as per agreement.
