The Institute for Turkish Studies (SUITS) is an independent research institute founded in 2012 with the aim of creating a more understandable and nuanced picture of Turkish politics for policymakers, business and the general public. The institute is a dynamic and inclusive research environment that encourages innovation, interdisciplinary research, and approaches that include diverse approaches. SUITS is located at the Department of Economic History and International Relations.

Project description

The Department of Economic History and International Relations and the Institute for Turkey Studies are looking for a postdoctoral fellow in International Relations with a focus on Turkish Security Policy/Turkey and International Security. The institute conducts research on Turkish foreign and security policy and the country's relationship with NATO and European security structures. The idea of this appointment is to strengthen that part of the research environment.

Main responsibilities

The position includes independent research on Turkey and international security. The position also includes administrative tasks, up to a maximum of 20 %. 

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assesment criteria

The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

We are particularly interested in candidates with merits in research relevant for international relations, political science or other relevant area. In the appointment, special and equal weight will be attached to:

  • research expertise
  • quality of the research plan
  • previous publications

Special emphasis will be placed on:

  • the ability to collaborate well in groups
  • language skills in English and Turkish (in that order)
  • experience and documented competence in administration and project coordination

About the post

The employment is full-time and valid until further notice, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Starting date as agreed, but no later than January 2025.
