The Department of Economic History and International Relations is a dynamic and strong education and research department at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University. More information about us, please visit: the Department of Economic History and International Relations.
The position is based at the Department of Economic History and International Relations and is connected to the project "Geographies of discontent: How regional inequalities affect the perceived legitimacy of international organizations". The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and investigates whether and why people perceive international organizations as legitimate. This political support is studied by focusing on an understudied factor: regional inequalities. Inequalities between subnational regions have been shown to make anti-system voting more likely in socioeconomically “left behind” places. This project examines the hypothesis that regional inequalities may also affect perceptions of legitimacy toward international organizations such as the EU, UN, and NATO, as well as the growth of populist political parties.
The primary tasks associated with the postdoctoral position are research-related and include completing and publishing work based on the project’s central database, SUB-TRUST. This database measures average trust or support for various international organizations among populations in over 110 countries at the regional level (ADM 1 and 2). The dataset is unique as the measurements are post-stratified and representative at the subnational level. It allows for time-series analysis at the subnational level across different world regions and countries, and can be linked to a variety of subnational socio-economic, meteorological, or political data. The postdoc is expected to analyze the database according to their own research interests and disseminate results through scientific journals and conferences. Additionally, the postdoc is expected to participate in the Higher Seminar in International Relations at the Department of Economic History and International Relations, and is welcome to attend seminars and workshops at the Stockholm Centre on Global Governance (SCGG). There are usually opportunities to teach at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
Special emphasis will be placed on the scientific experience of the candidate. We are particularly interested in candidates with merits in research relevant for international relations or time series analysis. Additional merits include capacity to work in an international cross-disciplinary team of researchers. The candidate must have excellent skills in academic written English.
The position involves full-time employment for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as per agreement.
