The Department of Linguistics offers courses and programmes in two main areas: linguistics and sign language. Our researchers are active in areas such as child language development, computational linguistics, general linguistics, the multilingualism of the deaf and hard of hearing, phonetics and sign language linguistics.
Linguistics, specialisin in General Linguistics. General Linguistics investigates the structure of the world's languages and studies various aspects of linguistic communication. Our ongoing research includes the following main areas: Linguistic Diversity, Psycholinguistics and Neurolinguistics. General Linguistics is also an educational profile within the Department of Linguistics, along with Computational Linguistics, Child Language Development, Phonetics, Sign Language and Multilingualism of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (please visit the department's website www.ling.su.se for further information). Linguistic diversity and the study of linguistic structures from a cross-linguistic perspective has been a high-profile area during the entire period that the Department of Linguistics has existed, both in terms of education and research. A number of researchers associated with the department are well established in the field and contribute to Stockholm University being widely regarded as a leader and a strong centre for language typology, language documentation and research on language in its wider geographical and historical context. In recent years, a neurolinguistic specialisation has also begun to emerge. The latter is strongly linked to the Stockholm University Brain Imaging Centre (SUBIC), a unit within the Department of Linguistics.
The duties consist of 30% research and 70% instruction, course development, supervision and examination at different levels in linguistics. Instruction is mainly within our Bachelor's and Master's programmes, but other appropriate educational tasks within the department's range of courses are also included. Examples of fields covered are syntactic theory, grammatical analysis, semantics, language typology, linguistic methods, field linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and courses with sociolinguistic content. The Senior Lecturer is expected to carry out pedagogical development work, engage in departmental research and be able to initiate, organise and lead research projects and further develop the subject. The position is meant to strategically broaden and complement our current expertise in general linguistics. We regard theoretical linguistics with a functionalist orientation, sociolinguistics or psycho-/neurolinguistics as particularly relevant fields in this regard.
Qualified for employment as Senior Lecturer in General Linguistics are those who have completed a doctoral degree in linguistics, have documented scientific competence in general linguistics, and have documented pedagogical skills. Ability to co-operate and general ability and aptitude needed to perform the duties well are also eligibility requirements.
In the selection of qualified applicants, great and equal importance will be attached to pedagogical and scientific expertise in linguistics with a specialisation in general linguistics. Great importance will also be attached to the breadth of these skills. The breadth of pedagogical competence refers to the ability to instruct in the subjects of our educational programme. The breadth of the scientific expertise refers to the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research projects, in line with other research conducted at the department.
