The Department of Linguistics offers courses and programmes in two main areas: linguistics and sign language. Our researchers are active in areas such as child language development, computational linguistics, general linguistics, the multilingualism of the deaf and hard of hearing, phonetics and sign language linguistics.
Phonetics is the science of speech and part of Linguistics - the science of human language. Phonetics is also a research and teaching profile at the Department of Linguistics together with General Linguistics, Child Language Development, Computational Linguistics and Sign Language (please visit the department's website www.ling.su.se). Research and teaching in Phonetics has been conducted at Stockholm University and before that at Stockholm University College since 1952. Collaboration with the Study Programme in Speech and Language Pathology at Karolinska Institutet has been ongoing since 1964. The current research is characterised by experimental and interdisciplinary work and has close contacts with Speech Technology, Speech and Language Pathology and Applied Language Teaching.
The position includes a maximum of 70% teaching and administration and at least 30% research and professional development. Teaching will mainly focus on phonetics at different levels, including courses within the Study Programme in Speech and Language Pathology, but also other suitable teaching within the department's existing course offerings. Teaching also includes course development, course responsibility, examination and supervision. The position holder is expected to engage in pedagogical, scientific and administrative development work, participate in the department's research, initiate, organize, and lead research projects focused on Phonetics, and further develop the subject.
The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian within two years.
To be eligible for appointment as Senior Lecturer in Phonetics, one must have a relevant doctoral degree (e.g., in Linguistics specializing in Phonetics), documented scientific competence in Phonetics, and documented pedagogical proficiency. General eligibility requirements include the ability to cooperate and the competence and suitability necessary to perform the duties well.
In the selection among eligible applicants, special and equal weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical expertise in Phonetics and great importance will also be attached to the breadth of these skills. Special emphasis will also be placed on the applicant's potential to contribute to the future development of both research and education.

Training in higher education pedagogy or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way is an advantage. Applicants who do not have a higher education teaching qualification of at least 15 credits and who are not deemed to have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way must undergo such training during the first two years of employment. Applicants who consider themselves to have equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal training must explain in their application how the knowledge has been acquired and why it corresponds to the competence provided by formal training.
This position (in Swedish, “universitetslektor”) is full-time, indefinite-term employment. A six-month probationary period may apply.
Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but the candidate should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require proficiency in Swedish within two years of employment.
