The Department of Chemistry is a big departments at the Faculty of Natural Science with about 180 employees, 80 graduate students and 40 postdocs. The teaching focuses on catalysis, environmental and materials chemistry, inorgaic chemistry and organic chemistry involving both physical organic chemistry and synthetic organic chemistry. The main research areas are: materailas chemistry, organic synthesis and catalysis.

Project description

The project involves the development of new heterogeneous metal catalysts for organic synthesis where different forms of cellulose are employed as carriers for metals. The new metal catalysts will be studied for obtaining different organic transformations. The project is divided in two parts. In one part, studies will be made for the immobilization of metal catalysts to microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and in another part these catalysts will be explored in selective organic reactions. Examples on reaction to be studied are nanometal-catalyzed allylic substitution and nanometal-catalyzed carbocyclizations of allenes. The metals used in this project will primarily be first-row transition metals such as iron, nickel, and copper. Also, studies of nanopalladium-catalyzed reactions will be made.

Main responsibilities

The position involves research within the area of organic chemistry. The research will include synthesis of different types of cellulose-based heterogeneous metal catalysts and their use in synthetic transformations.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Experience of metal-catalyzed organic reactions are important for carrying out the project.

About the employment

The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as soon as possible or as per agreement.
