Stockholm University conducts internationally prominent research on a broad front in the domains science, the humanities, social sciences and law. We provide first-, second- and third-cycle courses and programmes to 40,000 students and 1,300 doctoral students. We have 5,500 employees and conduct extensive collaboration with the surrounding community.

We are looking for a new Vice President who, together with the President, will lead the development of the university’s research and education towards the highest levels of quality and safeguard the principles of collegial decision-making, academic freedom and institutional autonomy. 

Qualifications for appointment as Vice President

A high level of research and teaching expertise is a basic requirement for appointment as vice president of Stockholm University.

The Vice President shall:

  • be qualified for appointment as professor;
  • have experience of qualified academic leadership;
  • have integrity, courage, and good collaborative abilities, as well as analytical and diplomatic skills;
  • have good knowledge of academia, as well as its relation to state and society;
  • have a strong ability for a national as well as an international outlook;
  • meet high demands on accountability and judgement; and
  • be able to communicate freely and well in speech and writing in Swedish and English.

The Vice President’s duties include:

  • safeguarding the principles of collegial decision-making, academic freedom and institutional autonomy;
  • ensuring a high level of quality in education and research activities;
  • strengthening Stockholm University’s position as a distinguished higher education institution both nationally and internationally;
  • formulating visions and strategies together with the President, as well as gathering the organisation around joint objectives and driving the organisation towards those objectives;
  • being a good and inspirational leader who motivates, engages and foregrounds the work of colleagues and creates a good work environment;
  • actively representing Stockholm University and conveying the university’s message in a confident manner;
  • establishing and developing contacts and relationships with the university’s important stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally;
  • acting responsibly given the national security situation;
  • ensuring a good study environment and strong student influence, and striving for good relations with students, doctoral students and their representatives; and 
  • ensuring that gender equality, equal opportunities, diversity and sustainability are integral to the university’s operations.

Eligibility

A person who is qualified for the position of professor or senior lecturer fulfils the requirements for appointment as Vice President, in accordance with Chapter 2, Section 11 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

About the assignment

The Vice President is appointed by the university board. The term of office is six years and starts 2025-07-01.
