The Department of Culture and Aesthetics (IKE) is one of the largest in the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. The Department has approximately 120 employees, including researchers, teachers, doctoral students, and technical and administrative staff. IKE conducts research and provides education in seven subject areas: Art History, Literary Studies, History of Ideas, Musicology, Theater and Performance Studies, Curating, and Cultural Heritage Studies. It gathers approximately 1000 students divided between the different subjects. The Department of Culture and Aesthetics is characterized by cross-disciplinary collaboration, including research activities such as workshops, thematic seminars, research application seminars, and research presentations by both staff and invited national and international scholars.

Art History has 12 permanently employed staff members, teachers, and researchers, and six doctoral students who conduct research and teaching. Throughout the years, our academic staff has been successful in acquiring external research funding and they actively participate in national and international research networks and collaborations. The subject area offers a wide range of courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. The MA programme, which is taught in English, allows degrees in either Art History or Cultural Heritage Studies. Subject/subject description

Art History at Stockholm University includes the study of art, aesthetic objects, and visual expressions in different historical and cultural contexts and from social as well as philosophical perspectives. The subject area encompasses art, architecture, design, and visual culture as well as cultural heritage.  It is an active participant in the development of the discipline, including its objects, theories, and methods.

Main responsibilities

The main tasks of the position consist of teaching at undergraduate and graduate level, and conducting research at a high national and international standard. Teaching may be done in Swedish (or other Scandinavian languages) or English. The academic staff at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics is expected to participate in the internal work of the department, including its overall administrative tasks. They are also expected to regularly apply for external research funding and to establish good contacts with the research community, nationally as well as internationally. The position includes competence development and research time according to regulated terms and conditions.

Qualification requirements

Qualified are applicants who have a doctoral degree in art history or equivalent academic competence and who have demonstrated teaching expertise. In addition, the ability to teach in Swedish (or Norwegian or Danish) and/or English is required. Teaching proficiency shall normally have been demonstrated through teaching at both undergraduate and master’s level. The skills must be well documented in a way that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities. The applicant must have documented good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability and suitability in general to perform the duties well.

Assessment criteria

Special and equal importance is attached to research and teaching skills. Research and teaching expertise in Cultural Heritage Studies is an advantage. Scientific excellence is assessed through the quality of the applicant's research, taking into account the capacity for innovative research. National and international publications over the last five years are especially advantageous. Teaching skills are assessed on the basis of experience, documented ability to creatively develop course activities, and good ability to carry out teaching, examination, and supervision. Special emphasis is placed on pedagogical self-reflection as well as on demonstrated ability to develop new courses and hold course responsibility.

Great weight is put on documented ability to cooperate with colleagues. Great weight is also put on documented ability to interact with the surrounding society, and to inform about research and development work. Experience of international collaborations and participation in international networks are advantageous. Administrative experience is also an advantage. In the event of equal merits among the highest-ranking applicants, priority will be given to the underrepresented gender.

It is a merit to have completed at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the employment

This position (in Swedish, “universitetslektor”) is full-time, indefinite-term employment. A six-month probationary period may apply.

The employment includes time for competence development and research according to the current terms and conditions of the collective agreement.

Applicants who do not have a higher education pedagogy qualification of at least 15 CEST must undergo such training within the first two years of employment. Applicants who consider themselves to have equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal training must explain in their application how the knowledge has been acquired and why it corresponds to the competence provided by formal training.
