The Department of Culture and Aesthetics (IKE) is a large and dynamic department within the Faculty of Humanities with about 120 employees, including approximately 50 PhD students within five subject areas.
Theatre Studies at Stockholm University is part of the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, which also includes the subject areas of History of Ideas, Art History, Literature, Musicology, Curating and Heritage Studies. Theatre Studies, which also encompasses Dance and Performance Studies, was founded at Stockholm University in 1946 and is an active and internationally oriented research environment. Our researchers approach various forms and genres of the performing arts as events, which are understood in relation to their specific social, historical and cultural contexts. Our work is based on an expanded concept of the performing arts, which includes spoken word drama, musicals, opera, ballet, contemporary dance, performance art, cultural productions, etc.

Subject area

The thesis work will be conducted within the framework of Theatre Studies. We especially encourage applications that relate to descriptions of the subject area. See also information about PhD studies at the Department.

Qualification requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second- cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second (advanced) cycle, or have otherwise acquired the equivalent knowledge, either in Sweden or abroad. 

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Theatre Studies stipulates that applicants must have successfully passed the Master course in Theatre and Performance Studies, or successfully completed an advanced level written thesis in Theatre Studies. 

The eligibility requirements may be fulfilled by an applicant who has acquired the equivalent competence within or outside the country. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection

The selection of eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the PhD education program. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: 

1.Previous qualifications
Previous education: Assessment of both depth and breadth of previous education. 

Scholarly production: Based on a Bachelor’s thesis, a Master’s thesis or, if applicable, other academic papers and/or articles, the ability of the applicant to benefit from the education is considered according to:

  • critical skills
  • analytical skills
  • creativity 
  • independence.

The assessment will also take into consideration the aspect of time, that is, to what extent the applicant has shown the ability to meet their previous scholarly obligations within any given time constraints. In addition, the scholarly progress of the applicant is considered. 

2. Research plan
The applicant should enclose a research plan (max. 15,000 characters including spaces), which covers the research problem and an outline of the research project. It should also describe why you are interested in the project and what makes you suitable for it, how the project relates to the state of research and which theoretical and methodological approaches you want to use in the project.

The research plan is assessed according to its relevance, originality and feasibility to complete the thesis within the given time constraints (that is, full-time work during a four-year period of doctoral studies).

4. Ability to collaborate.
The ability of the applicant to collaborate is evaluated based on letters of references, certificates and/or a job interview.

About the position

We offer a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with education, research and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20 %).

A new employment as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, the employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
