Project description

We offer a research position to work on the analysis of genomic data from Baltic Sea herring within a multidisciplinary project. The successful applicant will analyze herring population genetic structure from larval samples collected at multiple spawning locations over the season across several years. This is part of a larger project with the overall goal to understand how different herring spawning stocks are adapted to the seasonal dynamics of plankton and temperature, to predict which stocks are most sensitive to environmental change. Outcomes of this project will make an important and novel contribution to make recommendations on which coastal ecosystems and herring population diversity should be protected to promote population and fisheries recovery.

The selected candidate will work in the research group of Prof Monika Winder at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences and with Prof Henrik Svedäng at the Baltic Sea Centre. We use a multi-disciplinary research approach, combining descriptive field studies, experimental and long-term ecological research to understand the consequences of environmental dynamics for food web processes and ecosystem functions.

Main responsibilities

The main responsibility is to conduct SNP genotyping analysis to study the spatiotemporal distribution of herring populations and, along with environmental data, processes influencing population structure. Your work tasks include bioinformatic and statistical analysis of herring genomics data, publication and scientific communication of the results in peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings. There will be opportunities for genomic laboratory work and interaction with multiple research groups.

Qualification requirements

Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

We welcome applications from candidates who have experience in bioinformatics and working with large genomic datasets (SNP, whole genomes), have a background in population genomics, and strong statistical skills. A good conceptual understanding of ecological and/or evolutionary theory or fisheries biology is advantageous, as is experience in laboratory work with DNA extraction and preparation of genome libraries. Candidates will be highly motivated to apply their expertise to understand spatial and temporal dynamics of fish population structure, independent persons with a passion for science, and willing to collaborate with a variety of people.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in bioinformatic analysis and population genomics, and a track record of high research productivity for the career stage. Excellent communication and writing skills in English, good work ethics, and a strong commitment to research excellence are desired.
