The Department of Criminology is a department within the Faculty of Social Sciences with approximately 50 employees. Criminology is the scientific study of crime. A criminologist is interested in questions about the causes and structure of crime and its variation over time and space, but also in the effects of different types of penalties and measures to reduce crime and increase security. The Department of Criminology provides education at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate levels. More information regarding the department is available at the Department of Criminology.
The Department of Criminology at Stockholm University announces two to three PhD student positions. The thesis work will be conducted within the framework of criminology. We offer all our doctoral students a workplace at the department and require attendance and active participation in our research environment. On our website you can find more information about our postgraduate education and coursers.
In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
Special eligibility is granted to those who have taken at least 60 ECTS credits in criminology at the advanced level, or in another relevant subject for the doctoral education in criminology, of which at least 15 of these credits consist of an essay or equivalent independent work, or have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country, and have sufficient knowledge of Swedish and/or English to be able to benefit from the doctoral level education in criminology.
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle program may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. Special attention is given to the degree of independence in analysis and design exhibited by applicants in their earlier work, their methodological and scientific maturity, and the capacity for problem formulation and stringency exhibited in earlier work as well as in the research proposal. Importance is also given to the possibilities for the department to offer adequate supervision of the planned research. Decisions on admissions are taken by the Department Board no later than December 9, 2025.
