The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is one of the Sweden’s largest research environments within archaeology. The Department comprise six units: Archaeology, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Stockholm Numismatic Institute and Centre for Palaeogenetics. The four-year doctoral studies will be placed at the unit of Archaeology and will follow the examination requirements of the Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies. They are financed by Gunnar Ekström’s Foundation for Numismatic Research and Sven Svensson’s Foundation for Numismatics. The research must be within numismatic or monetary history, i.e. coins in their administrative, cultural, economic, political or social context in a broad sense, in Northern Europe from the Viking Age to the Early Modern Period. The research must deal with activities or concepts that have left material traces.
In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
Concerning the Specific entry requirements, described in the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field archaeology within the subfield of general archaeology, it is required to have successfully completed second cycle level courses to at least 30 credits, including an examination task of at least 15 credits, or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere. Concerning the Specific entry requirements, it is required to know Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English. The language skills must comprise ability to read, speak and write.

The research plan
The applicant must submit a summary presentation of the planned research project. It must comprise a definition of the research subject and a summary plan for the implementation of the work. The research plan will be evaluated according to:
Merits
The assessment will also look at the ability to complete scientific tasks at time as documented in the applicant’ earlier work. The assessment will also consider earlier research experience within the fields of numismatics and monetary history.
Ability to collaborate
The ability of the applicant to collaborate will be assessed based on e.g. references, certificates or interviews.
Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University.
We offer a stipend during the first two years, and then a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of financed training may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student, you should devote yourself to your own doctoral education.
