Project description

The Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to pioneering research in open-system quantum simulations with trapped Rydberg ions. This position is part of the ERC Synergy project "Open 2D Quantum Simulator (OPEN-2QS)".

The OPEN-2QS project aims at developing a 2D quantum simulator for open system quantum dynamics using trapped ions excited to Rydberg states. This novel approach features fast interactions combined with long-term stability. This will enable the simulation and study of phenomena such as novel states of matter like quantum glasses, molecular dynamics and quantum thermodynamics.

The project is primarily experimental and will be carried out within the Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University. It will involve close collaboration with experimentalists and theoreticians at the Universities of Mainz and Tübingen within the framework of the ERC Synergy project.

For more information see http://qtech.fysik.su.se/.

Main responsibilities

The position involves:

  • Design, set up and operation of a cryogenic trapped ion experiment, including excitation to Rydberg states.
  • Performing high-precision measurements and data analysis of quantum dynamics in the trapped-ion system.
  • Investigating novel applications of Rydberg-ion-based quantum simulations.
  • Close collaboration with theoretical and experimental teams at Stockholm, Mainz, and Tübingen.
  • Assistance in the supervision of PhD and Master’s students in the lab.
  • Contribution to grant reports and documentation related to the ERC Synergy project.

Qualification requirements

In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.

We welcome applications from candidates with:

  • A PhD in experimental physics, quantum optics, atomic physics, or a related field.
  • Strong hands-on experimental skills, particularly in laser systems, optics, cryogenics, vacuum technology, and/or quantum control techniques.
  • A willingness to collaborate with both experimentalists and theorists.

Assessment criteria

It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to skills and experience in experimental research in quantum information or quantum optics, experience in trapped ions, Rydberg physics, quantum simulations or precision laser spectroscopy.

About the employment

The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date as soon as possible or as per agreement.
