The Department of Law is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University with some 170 employees and 5,500 students. Over 70 teachers are engaged full-time in teaching and in conducting research on which the Department’s teaching is founded. Subject/subject description
European law with a focus on constitutional and institutional EU law

Main responsibilities

The position includes teaching, research, administration, and contacts with the surrounding community. The duties also include applying for external research funding and following developments in the teacher's own subject area and in society in general that are relevant to the teacher's work at the university.

The position includes teaching for 70 percent of the annual working hours. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, and other interactive course elements, examinations, course responsibility, course administration, supervision, and the development and updating of teaching materials. Teaching will mainly be in conducted in European law, but lecturing in other subjects may also be included.

The position is full-time. The position concerns research in the subject of European law with a focus on constitutional EU law. Teaching is normally carried out not only in the form of classroom instruction but also through course coordination, course development and course responsibility, examination, supervision of degree projects, etc.

The teaching component of the work primarily involves teaching in and participating in the planning of the basic course in European law as well as the subject's advanced courses and master's programs.

Required qualifications
In order to qualify for employment as a senior lecturer, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching and pedagogical expertise and been awarded a doctoral degree in law or have corresponding research competence (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 4, § 4).

A requirement of the position is good proficiency in Swedish as well as English and the person to whom the position is offered should be able to carry out teaching in either language within two years from the start of the employment.

Assessment criteria

Special and equal importance is attached to scientific and pedagogical skills. Importance is also attached to administrative skills and the ability to interact with the surrounding community. Other expertise and experience relevant to the position are also considered relevant.

When assessing scientific competence, primary consideration is given to the scientific quality of research in constitutional and institutional EU law, while experience in other areas of European law is also considered a merit. The scope of the research, primarily in terms of depth and breadth, is also taken into account. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research projects and doctorial courses, as well as the ability to obtain competitive research funding, is taken into account.  The ability to interact both within the academic community and with the surrounding community is also considered important.

When assessing teaching skills, the primary consideration is quality. The scope of teaching is also considered important. Particular emphasis is placed on experience of teaching European law, but teaching in other legal subjects is also taken into consideration. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, as well as the ability to link teaching to research, is important. The competence to interact on higher education issues with actors within and outside the university is also included in pedagogical skills.

Administrative skills and experience, as well as other skills and experience relevant to the position and the duties involved, are also considered merits. Such skills can be demonstrated, for example, through an ability to plan overall operations, skills in managing operations and personnel, and an ability to collaborate. The ability to interact with the surrounding community and to communicate information about research and development work is also considered a merit.

Sufficient computer skills to be able to use the various systems used in teaching are a requirement.
