Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) experimentally addresses fundamental problems in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. State-of-the art and advanced methodologies are applied in a professional research environment characterized by its well-established international profile. The institute has 30 research groups with a research staff of around 180. Read more about MBW at www.su.se/mbw.

We are now looking for a highly motivated and proactive Senior Lab Manager to join the research group of Christian Riedel. Research in the Riedel group is focused on the basic molecular mechanisms of how aging and the occurrence of age-related diseases are regulated. Further, the group develops screening strategies to identify aging-preventive pharmaceuticals.

Main responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for organizing and managing the daily laboratory operations  and for advising and supporting our lab members in their experimental work. In the remaining time, you will be responsible for conducting research projects of your own.

Regarding lab organization and management, you will coordinate ordering, inventory, and maintenance of the lab equipment and infrastructure. You will manage the experimental materials and reagents, ensuring proper storage and handling of biological resources and chemicals. Regarding advising and conducting experimental work, most of this work will be done in the model organism C. elegans. You will contribute your expertise in this model organism, guide lab members in laboratory routines and protocols, and train them in methodologies that they are not familiar with yet. You will also conduct in vitro work in molecular biology (e.g., cloning, genotyping, and Illumina sequencing), biochemistry (e.g. protein purification, immune-precipitation, ChIP-seq, and RIP-seq), as well as in vivo work (e.g., maintenance of C. elegans and human cell cultures, genetic manipulation, crossing, lifespan assays, stress response assays, and microscopy). You are expected to document your work meticulously.

You will contribute to the supervision of master students, PhD students, and postdocs. Furthermore, you will actively participate in the group's research activities, conducting your own projects within the group's research area. This will also involve writing scientific manuscripts, preparing application documents, and applying for ethical permits. Finally, you may be asked to support teaching activities that the research group is involved, including seminars and practical courses.

Qualification requirements

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is dedicated to their work and possesses excellent collaboration and communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, taking ownership of their responsibilities and displaying a proactive attitude. They should be a good team-player and fit for our research group. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

Essential qualifications for this position include:

  • A PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • A solid background in basic/general methods used in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry research.
  • Several years of experience in organizing and managing a laboratory environment.
  • Several years of experience in supervising undergraduate and PhD students.
  • Extensive experience in working with the model organism C. elegans, i.e. maintenance, crossing, RNAi, and transgenesis.
  • Extensive experience with molecular biological techniques, i.e. cloning, genotyping.
  • Experience with epifluorescence microscopy.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Swedish.

Additional qualifications that will be considered advantageous:

  • Proficiency in chemical and biological risk assessment.
  • Experience in application processes for ethical and work environment-related permits.
  • Experience in order procedures at public agencies.
  • Basic knowledge of working with cell culture.
