The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) is located in the Arrhenius Laboratories, situated at the University Campus at Frescati. Presently around 100 people, including 35 PhD students and 15 postdocs, in 25 research groups work at DEEP.

Main responsibilities

As a research assistant you will join a team of scientists at DEEP and the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University and contribute to ongoing research on the evolution of pollen morphology in response to evolutionary transitions between wind- and insect-pollination modes. You will collect, prepare, image, and post-process pollen samples from herbarium collections worldwide. The main tasks include assessing the quality of pollen slides, preparing and scanning multi-slide setups using an automated high-throughput light microscopy system, and assisting in post-processing of images to extract morphometric measurements and morphological traits. Your responsibilities may also include preparation of new pollen slides from herbarium samples, database management, image curation and analyses, and administration related to sample collection.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree in evolutionary biology or related field.
  • Microscopy experience is a merit, preferably with automated light microscopy systems.
  • Experience working in biological or chemical research laboratory settings is a merit.
  • Analytical and programming skills (particularly Python experience) is a merit.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Substantial weight will be given to personal aptitude, suitability, and motivation.

About the employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment for three months. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date in January 2026 or as agreement.
