The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. SciLifeLab (SciLifeLab) is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource hosted by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The center also collaborates with several other universities.

The employment will be placed at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, at Stockholm university. More information about us, please visit: www.dbb.su.se.

Main responsibilities

We are looking for someone eager to bring their skills to strengthen the structural and cell biology communities as well as to provide smooth access, support and training to our users. The facility is part of cryo-NET, the Nordic Cryo-EM network, and collaborates closely with advanced light microscopy, NMR spectroscopy and structural mass spectrometry Swedish SciLifelab facilities to enable fully integrated multimodal imaging and structural workflows, from molecules to cells.
The cryo-EM Unit Stockholm node is placed at the SciLifeLab Solna Campus and is equipped with one Titan Krios G2, equipped with a Ceta CMOS, a Falcon III and Gatan K3 BioQuantum electron detectors, one Titan Krios G3i, equipped with a Ceta-D camera and a Gatan K3 BioQuantum detector, one Talos Arctica equipped with Falcon 4i and Selectris energy filter plus Ceta CMOS with EPU-D for diffraction. For sample preparation and correlative workflows, the Unit is equipped with a Chameleon sample freezer, a Primo micropatterning system and Leica Cryo Thunder microscope.

The candidate will:

  • Ensure the maintenance of the instruments with regular interaction with the providers’ system engineers.
  • Train and support users in sample preparation and data collection (both for siungle particle and tomography).
  • Provide advice and hands-on guidance in data processing and analysis, helping users implement state-of-the-art pipelines for both single-particle and cryo-ET workflows.
  • Contribute to the development of cryo-ET and volume EM capabilities (such as plasma FIB-SEM) and to correlative workflows linking cryo-EM with advanced light microscopy.
  • Collaborate closely with researchers across Sweden and the Nordic countries, supporting projects that span molecular, cellular, and systems-level questions in biology and medicine.

Qualification requirements

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent competence in structural biology, biophysics, cell biology or related fields.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in operation of high-end cryo-EM instrumentation for data collection and analysis (either single particle cryo-EM or tomography and subtomogram averaging).
  • Ideally, the candidate will have experience volume EM or micro-ED.
  • Strong technical, communication, and teaching skills, with enthusiasm for user training and collaborative research.
