The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is the largest archaeological environment in Sweden and consists of six sections: Archaeology, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and Centre of Pelaeogenetics. Centre of Paleogenetics is looking for a research assistant. The position is including in the Stockholm Universities part of the the RJ Program "Crisis, conflict and climate". The program is exploring the migration period, mainly on the Baltic island Öland, with different tools of which ancient human DNA is one. The research group working in this program is interdisciplinary but with a strong focus on archaeological questions. The project funding for the position is sufficient for two years.
The research assistant will organize the practical "Crisis, conflict and climate" work in the ancient DNA laboratories and produce large scale sequence data from prehistoric human remains relating to the program. It is also expected that the successful applicant will participate in the daily activities at the Centre of Paleogenetics and interact with other projects.
A Degree of Master in a relevant area e.g. archaeometry, osteology, zoology, ecology, population genetcis and documented experience of laboratory work in the relevant area (either with ancient human remains or with ancient human DNA). Because the position involves integration with a research group, personal skills such as, good collaborative and analytical skills, ability to work independently and take own initiatives, well-developed sense of responsibility and service mindedness, well-developed ability of oral and written communication in Swedish and English are all considered as merits as well as experience of Next-generation Sequencing of aDNA or laboratory work with prehistoric human remains.
This is a half-time (50 %) indefinite-term employment. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually. Start date 1 August 2026 (or as soon as possible).
