The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Stockholm University currently conducts teaching and research in two main areas: Asian Languages and Cultures (Korean, Japanese, and Chinese) and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (Arabic and Middle Eastern and North African Studies). The department has approximately 35 employees and around 760 full-time equivalent students.

Subject/subject description

Interdisciplinary approaches, intercultural perspectives, and applied research are central aspects of our Korean Studies research. Our areas of specialization include modern and contemporary culture, literature, and society in South Korea, as well as North Korea. Within the section, research areas include contemporary Korean literature, literary history, translation studies, local and regional culture, contemporary society, disability studies, and human rights in both South and North Korea.

Main responsibilities

The duties of a Lecturer (adjunkt) in Korean primarily include teaching language proficiency (both spoken and written) and assessment at the undergraduate level. 

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for appointment as a Lecturer in Korean, applicants must have completed a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Korean, teaching Korean as a foreign language, or a related field by the application deadline.

Applicants must have documented teaching experience in Korean at a university and/or upper secondary level.

Excellent proficiency in Korean and English, both spoken and written, as well as a strong ability to teach in Korean, are required. Proficiency in Swedish is considered an advantage.

Assessment criteria

In the assessment of applicants, particular emphasis will be placed on pedagogical skills and experience in teaching Korean as a foreign language. The ability to design and deliver instruction in both spoken and written language proficiency is essential.

The ability to collaborate and contribute to a positive work environment is highly valued.

Additional qualifications of merit include a teaching qualification or higher education pedagogy training, as well as experience with administrative tasks within the education sector.

The candidate deemed most qualified will be offered the position, taking into account the university’s gender equality policy.

The position as Lecturer in Korean includes both teaching and administrative responsibilities. In addition to teaching duties, it is important that the successful candidate has the ability and interest to carry out various administrative tasks within the section. These may include, for example, supporting exchange students and participating in the department’s quality assurance work.

The successful candidate should also be prepared to take on coordinating roles in projects and events within the division.

In the appointment process, attention will be given to teaching skills and academic qualifications. In addition, administrative skills will be considered.

It is a merit to have completed at least 7,5 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the employment

This is a 75-100 %  fixed-term position from August 1, 2026, until January 31, 2027.  A position as lecturer at Stockholm University does not include opportunities for promotion to an academic position at a higher level. Start date August 1, 2026, or to be agreed upon.
