The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education spanning the atmosphere, ocean and physical climate sciences. MISU offers educational programmes at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels. Our research addresses fundamental questions concerning the dynamics, physics, chemistry and biogeochemistry of the atmosphere and ocean relevant to weather and climate. MISU strives toward a broad representation of research within our scientific domain. We study questions originating from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere and from the tropics to the poles. In this effort, we use and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interplay with observations. We also develop and lead observational research using remote-sensing and in-situ measurements, including satellite missions and icebreaker expeditions to the Arctic.

MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, which includes the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Centre, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is an international workplace, and more than half of the staff have a background outside Sweden. As an employee at MISU, you are offered favorable employment conditions and a good working environment. More information about us and our doctoral education can be found at the Department of Meteorology

Main responsibilities

We are seeking a candidate who wants to work in a dynamic, international academic environment, providing advanced user support for computation-intensive climate research at the national level, combined with research-adjacent IT support.

Climate research at the Bolin Centre covers a broad range of topics. A significant part of the research is computation-intensive and relies on the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS). The Bolin Centre also coordinates national advanced user support for climate modelling within NAISS. Modelling is carried out across scales ranging from LES to global models, from paleoclimate simulations to future projections, using both traditional methods and AI and machine learning.

We are looking for a person whose expertise strengthens the current group of application experts at the Bolin Centre, for example through skills and experience in global or regional climate modelling, high-resolution modelling, ocean or ice modelling, data analysis, or machine learning.

User support within the Bolin Centre accounts for 50% of the position and includes advanced support to researchers related to computational resources, models, and data management. The remainder of the position involves responsibility for the IT environment at the Department of Meteorology.

The role of IT manager includes, among other things, procurement, installation, configuration, and operation of operating systems and research software in Linux, macOS, and Windows environments. You will be responsible for ongoing system updates, patching, logging, and access management for servers and AV equipment, and you will work with IT security and incident management in close collaboration with Stockholm University’s central IT security function.

An important part of the role is providing research-adjacent IT support to researchers and doctoral students, for example with regard to software, data management, server and storage solutions, and large-format printing

Qualification requirements

You hold a PhD in atmospheric science and oceanography by the time you have started the position, possess strong subject-matter expertise, and have experience with HPC. You should be well equipped to communicate with users, assist research projects within your domain, and provide general support to both students and established researchers in broader HPC-related matters such as data management and hardware. You should also have an interest in following and disseminating relevant developments in HPC, in collaboration with the Bolin Centre’s modelling coordinators and other application experts.

In addition, you need strong technical competence enabling you to take responsibility for local IT operations. Knowledge of Swedish and very good proficiency in English are required.

As a person, you are self-driven and have a structured and organized approach to your work. You thrive in a role where you both work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to move tasks forward, contributing to development through a proactive and attentive working style.

Great importance will be placed on your personal competencies during the recruitment process.
