The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education spanning the atmosphere, ocean and physical climate sciences. MISU offers educational programmes at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels. Our research addresses fundamental questions concerning the dynamics, physics, chemistry and biogeochemistry of the atmosphere and ocean relevant to weather and climate. MISU strives toward a broad representation of research within our scientific domain.
We study questions originating from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere and from the tropics to the poles. In this effort, we use and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interplay with observations. We also develop and lead observational research using remote-sensing and in-situ measurements, including satellite missions and icebreaker expeditions to the Arctic.
The department has around 60 employees and is embedded in a larger research environment, including the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Centre and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is highly international, with over half of our employees coming from outside Sweden and both Swedish and English are used as working languages. We welcome and value diversity in our working environment. For more information about us, please visit: The Department of Meteorology.
Project description
Aerosol particles in the atmosphere play an important role in cloud formation and in the Earth's radiation balance. In this project, which is linked to the EU project CERTAINTY, we study how interactions between aerosol particles and clouds are manifested in changes to both precipitation patterns and the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events. The project will primarily make use of high-resolution simulations.
Main responsibilities
In this project, you will conduct research on the role of aerosol particles in precipitation patterns and extreme rainfall. This will primarily be carried out through the analysis of global high-resolution simulations using the ICON climate model, but may also include the analysis of observations and other models.
Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
Assessment criteria
The doctoral degree must be in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, oceanography or a related field. The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills within the area of the employment. An excellent command of written and spoken English is also required.
About the employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of 12 months. Start date 2026-10-01 or as per agreement.
