The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The Department is divided into four units with more than 170 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science you will be part of a dynamic environment with work being done in leading research areas and with a strong international profile. More information about us, please visit: The Department of Environmental Science.

The Contaminant Chemistry Unit currently consists of 7 research groups (Benskin, Cousins, MacLeod, Rahu, McLachlan, Posselt, and Sobek). Our research programs examine the occurrence and behavior of pollutants in the environment and in the technosphere. Areas of particular interest include the discovery of new contaminants, understanding the physical, chemical, and biological pathways that contaminants follow, and the development of novel tools and techniques for sampling and analysis. We strive to synthesize our scientific understanding about the sources, transport, transformation and bioaccumulation of environmental contaminants into mathematical models that inspire new scientific hypotheses and support environmental decision-making.

To support our ongoing research and student training, the Contaminant Chemistry Unit is seeking a laboratory engineer. The individual will join a team of three other permanently employed technical staff in the unit.

Main responsibilities

  • Together with the other laboratory staff in the unit, develop and maintain a safe laboratory working environment.
  • Support ongoing teaching and mentoring of early career researchers within the unit. This may include laboratory instruction as part of courses but also training of new researchers in good laboratory practice.
  • Support ongoing research within the unit, including field sampling as well as lab activities such as extraction and instrumental analysis of environmental samples.
  • Preparation and management of laboratory risk assessments in collaboration with students and post-doctoral researchers.
  • Procurement and management of lab supplies and equipment (ie, solvents, disposable lab supplies, standards and reagents).
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment in both instrument analysis and wet labs. This includes different types of low- and high-resolution mass spectrometers coupled to gas or liquid chromatographs.
  • Preparation and organization of chemical standards.
  • Washing, drying and firing lab glassware.
  • Contribute to a good psychosocial work environment with a service-oriented attitude.

Qualification requirements

  • A postsecondary diploma or degree with a focus on chemical analysis / analytical chemistry (or similar).
  • Theoretical knowledge of, and practical experience in trace analysis of organic contaminants. using liquid chromatography and/or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.
  • Experience specifically with pyrolysis GC-MS, ion mobility mass spectrometry, and/or Orbitrap mass spectrometry is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to be flexible to rapidly changing work tasks.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate in English is required.
